Outdoor Activities for Toddlers



These fun outdoor activities will enhance your toddler’s development and we are pretty sure that you will enjoy getting outside in the fresh air for a little al fresco fun.

1. Mud Pies >

Kids love to be at one with nature and what can be simpler than spending hours on end playing in the mud! All you need is a good spot of soil in your backyard, a little water to make the soil softer and plenty of imagination from your little one.

You will need:

• Soil
• Scoop
• Water
• Plates, bowls, buckets

2. Shadow Art >

This is such a fun activity for sunny days. If your child will stand still long enough, trace his shadow on the sidewalk or driveway. Have him change positions, then trace his shadow again. Make several tracings, and then see if your child can fit his shadow back inside the tracings.




You Will Need:

• Chalk in several colors (a wider diameter works best)
• A washable, smooth, outdoor surface
• A bit of early morning or later afternoon summer sun

3. Treasure Hunt >

Ahoy there, me hearties! If you have a family of budding pirates, what could be more exciting than a treasure hunt? Turn your backyard into a land of secrets and let your children search for hidden treasure in true pirate style.





You will need:

• Small tokens to serve as the treasure (this pirate loot is ideal or you could use chocolate coins)
• Small paper bag
• Black felt pen
• Sheet of white paper
• Pencil
• Black tea to stain paper for additional effect (optional)

Benefits: Navigation, correspondence of symbols to physical world

4. Play Traffic Cop >

Your toddlers can recreate the directions of a traffic light and organize a group race. Whoever makes it to the finish line first while obeying the rules of the road is the winner!





You will need:

• Game participants (minimum of 3)
• Red, yellow and green construction paper
• Straws
• Glue
• Black marker
• Medium bowl for tracing
• Scissors

5. Ping Pong Painting >

As you will guess, this is a very messy activity, but it is also one of the most fun things to do with creative children. This can be done indoors, but we wouldn't recommend it unless you are thinking of redecorating!


You will need:

• Ping Pong Balls
• Paint
• Paper
• Cardboard box
• Masking tape

Benefits: Gross motor skills, inspires creativity, colors
