I’m going to give you a little peek into our homeschool routine. Homeschooling has been wonderful for my family, but I realize it isn’t for everyone. That’s okay. I pinkie promise that I’m not trying to push homeschooling on anyone, or tell you that you are doing wrong. If at any point I make you feel that way, rest assured that is NOT my intention.
I have nothing against ‘regular’ school. My children actually had wonderful teachers whom I can never thank enough for loving my children while they were away from me back when we were using the public school system.
Let’s get back to that peek thing, eh? I get up a few hours before the kids so that I can get some work done before they’re up and around. I wake them up for breakfast about 8 o’clock and then it’s on to our book work.
Their lesson plans vary by age, but we hit all three R’s during this time. My youngest, who is 5, is always done with her book work early. She then drives her brother and sister bonkers while they try desperately to get their work done, too.
I had to do something. She couldn’t continue to disrupt their day, and we only do school work during school time.
That’s when I found ABCMouse.com.
I was skeptical at first. I’ve seen commercials for this site before. They are always about struggling learners who magically catch back up when presented with the curriculum from ABCMouse.com.
It didn’t necessarily sound like a good fit for my girl. She’s above grade level in nearly every subject simply because she is a voracious learner. Since they give a 30-day free trial and I was desperate, I decided to give it a try anyway.
We got an account set up, and I was able to set the level so that the lessons were appropriate for her. Then she created her little character and off she went down her Learning Path.
The Learning Path is a whole curriculum put together based on what your child already knows. There are songs, chants, puzzles, coloring pages, practice pages and games available on each lesson.
I was amazed at how well these little activities combined to help my daughter learn new concepts. The activities are short, making them perfect for young learners’ short attention spans. She loves the letter videos and I love that she’s having fun while constantly reviewing her letter sounds.
Tickets are earned for every activity completed, and she adores using those tickets to buy pets for her virtual classroom. She’s got a passel of hamsters in that joint. There are so many educational games in which she has taken an interest and she doesn’t even realize she’s learning while she plays them.
While she’s on ABCMouse.com, I don’t have to worry that she’s going to wind up somewhere on the Internet that I don’t want her to go. You don’t have to worry about your child trying to make in-app purchases because there are none.
There are no advertisements on the site, and there is a great app for Kindle so that the program can become portable.
ABCMouse.com has provided us with a less stressful, more productive homeschool experience. Knowing my daughter is having a positive experience while learning is invaluable.
I want my kids to feel like learning is fun. If you have a child between the ages of 3 and 7, give it a shot. You can get your free 30-day trial here.
