6 Preschool Math Activities Your Kids Will Enjoy

Let’s face it. Learning math can be tough. Why not instill a natural affinity for numbers in your children when they’re very young? I struggled with number concepts, so I’m a big fan of incorporating them into everyday life as often as possible.

Teachable Moments >

In our house, learning math begins in the kitchen. As soon as a child can toddle to the table with a fistful of napkins, we start. When we set the table, we count up. When we clear, we count down. Little ones love to help, so make chore time teaching time. Look for more ways to build learning into your children’s days with the following advice from Sesame street.org.

Play Store >

This is a great game that can be made increasingly challenging. Use toys and canned goods for props, and set up a make-believe market. Make price tags from one to ten cents. Provide pennies (they can be sanitized first), and help children to buy and sell merchandise. As children grow, teach them how to use larger denominations and to make change. Consider a toy cash register or a shopping cart, like the one in our rememberstuff.me 5 Rainy Day Activities blog, to add realism to your children’s play.

Math Fun with Fridge Magnets >

For two generations, my family has had number magnets on the fridge for kids to manipulate as they choose. Your preschoolers will enjoy a game I call “Number of the Day.” Place the chosen number in a prominent place on the fridge, and have children look for that number during the day. Take a walk past numbered houses, shop at the grocery store, or browse magazines, to help your little ones spot this number in the world around them. Put up a set of Amazon.com’s Kids Refrigerator Magnets: Magnet Math Set for Fridge Learning by For Kids Products on your fridge, and unlock the world of math for your preschoolers.
