Whether we’re talking lunch at home or a sack lunch taken to school, there are lots of ways to make kids’ lunches healthy and still enjoyable.
I’ll be perfectly honest and admit that even when we’re home for lunch (which is often as we’re homeschoolers), I frequently make ‘sack’ lunches for my kids and store them in the refrigerator. Some days are simply too hectic to face preparing a decent meal at lunch time and then cleaning up afterwards.
Here are five ideas for creating healthy lunches that your kids will love.
Healthy Cool Containers
Get cool containers to pack lunches in. Little boxes with individual compartments filled with a wide array of small portions different foods are a great way to get kids to eat a well-balanced lunch.
Pack veggie sticks with edamame hummus, a mini sandwich, assorted berries, and a little chocolate for dessert, in a cute little divided container, to make lunch more appealing to kids.
There’s a reason big food companies package lunches the way they do, and you can mimic that kid-friendly style in a way that is good for your children.

Cut food into cutesy shapes. Seriously, I know it seems a little over-the-top for the average busy parent, but it makes kids want to eat healthy foods. Cheese, cucumbers, bell peppers, melon, and thinly sliced apples are all great for this.
Use mini metal cookie cutters to make melon stars and cucumber flowers.
Kids’ Food on a Stick
Similar to number two in that it adds a certain visual and sensory appeal, put food on a stick. It makes lunch fun!
Try these Caprese veggie kabobs. They are great cold and aren’t too sophisticated for little taste buds. You might even want to sneak some into your own lunch box!

Sandwiches are NOT the enemy! They can be a healthy, portable lunch option that is extremely versatile. Sandwiches can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make them.

Use whole-grain bread and preservative-free lunch meats to up your healthy sandwich game. Use a sandwich press to create crust-free sandwich pockets that have the added bonus of being quite tidy. It's just like the frozen sandwich pockets, but more affordable and healthier!

Soup is a great kid-friendly lunch option and can be kept warm using a thermal cup or bowl for sack lunches. A simple tomato soup in a thermal bowl with a cheese sandwich or whole grain crackers makes a satisfying meal full of veggies.
