When I choose a website for children, I look for education plus entertainment, because kids learn best when they’re having fun.
When I think I’ve found a winner, I often go to Common Sense Media for a review I know I can trust. The following are learning websites I feel good about recommending to you. Enrich your children’s online time with the following:
Bill Nye the Science Guy is available as an app and requires iOS 6 or later. It is designed for iPhone and iPad. It’s optimized for iPhone 5 and compatible with iPodTouch. Link to iTunes to buy Bill Nye videos.
Based on the popular PBS TV show, this quirky scientist never fails to delight with his spectacular experiments and matter-of-fact explanations of fascinating phenomena. When science is fun, concepts of earth science, physics and chemistry are child’s play.
Bill nye on itunesBased on the PBS TV show, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, a modern take on a Mister Rogers theme, this bundle of learning activities centers on empathy and feelings.
There’s a trolley game, sing-a-long, drawing easel and feelings photo booth to help children learn how to express their feelings and understand that other people have feelings, too. Available as an app. Compatible with iPad and Android.
Daniel Tiger's Grr-ific Feelings on AmazonThis fun math app is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Android, Fire Phone and Kindle Fire. Kids move a marble through mazes, and master math and critical thinking skills as they play.
Marble Math on itunesThis free website was developed for teachers. It’s a series of multi-media history books developed by Kenneth Udhe, a social studies teacher in Michigan. A great resource for middle and high school students, this website offers a wealth of U.S. and world history in a humorous, reader-friendly format.
The next time your tween/teen needs to know the details of the Louisana Purchase or Medieval guilds and towns, he can consult this site for a fun way to remember the facts.
to sites.rememberstuff.meDo you remember LeVar Burton and PBS’ Reading Rainbow TV show? He’s back with Skybrary, an online website that helps children develop a love of reading. Try it free for 14 days and buy a membership to continue. Skybrary bills itself as an "interactive digital library of hand-curated children’s books and video field trips."
Children pilot their own hot air balloons to visit 7 islands, each with its own literary collection. Over 500 stories are available. Each can be read independently, or children can listen to a famous storyteller reading aloud. Kids will love watching the books’ illustrations come to life! Skybrary is also available as an app for iOS 6.0 or later, and is compatible with iPad.
