Sure, lots of us resort to the same-old bowl of cereal in the morning and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But cereal isn’t always the healthiest option.
Depending on what you choose, many popular breakfast cereals are made from highly refined grains and they’re packed with sugar, artificial colorings and preservatives. Sugary carbs that are devoid of nutrients are considered empty calories, especially in comparison to nutrient-dense whole grains paired with fresh fruit, nuts and seeds.
Check out the following healthy breakfast recipes for inspiration. They’re easy to make, and sure to please a crowd.
This recipe from the Food Network is made with almond milk, walnuts, bananas, and antioxidant rich cocoa powder and dark chocolate. We’re talking whole grains, omega-3s, b-vitamins, potassium… So much goodness, and it’s quick to make, too!
to recipes.rememberstuff.meThis buttermilk waffle recipe from the Food Network is made with whole wheat pastry flour and rolled oats, nutrient dense whole grains that add a delicious flavor and texture to the mix. Serve with fresh berries and pure maple syrup, or spread with protein-rich nut or seed butter and your favorite fruit preserves.
These quick and healthy breakfast burritos from Heather Demeritte at MyRecipes.com take scrambled eggs to the next level with onions, green chiles and fresh homemade pico de gallo. If you (or your kids) aren’t into spicy food, replace the chiles with diced bell pepper and omit the crushed red pepper. Wrap your burritos up in foil for a portable meal.
Okay, so the name really tells you very little about what this dish actually is, but it’s intriguing, no? This healthy breakfast might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s super quick to make and ranch-girl at Food.com (the recipe’s author) swears by it. Simply combine diced ripe avocado, fresh or frozen and defrosted berries, and low-fat cottage cheese and you’re ready to break that fast.
Muffins are one of my favorite breakfasts. They’re definitely delicious straight out of the oven, but they’re also easy to reheat and they freeze well. Make a few batches and pop one or two in the toaster oven whenever you need a quick, healthy breakfast or snack. These muffins from QueenAstroPirate at Food.com are made with whole wheat flour, oats, ginger, bananas, applesauce, almonds, walnuts and raisins. Wow!
Remember – a varied diet is one of the keys to good health, since changing up what we eat and eating a variety of different types of food in many different colors makes it more likely that we are getting all of the different nutrients that we need. It might be quick and easy to eat the same thing for breakfast every day, but easy gets boring after awhile, right?
Stock up on some of your breakfast favorites (like frozen whole grains muffins!) and make something different that’s quick and easy for breakfast tomorrow.
